Swiss territory against Pakistan

“The Foreign Office and our missions abroad are actively engaged in order to ensure that this issue is not portrayed in any other context by the detractors,” he said.

Replying to a question about the opening of a US consulate in Balochistan, the spokesman said that the US embassy has filed an application to the foreign office in this regard, but so far no decision has been taken.

On the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesperson clarified that it had by no means been shelved or put on the back burner in the wake of the recent normalisation of relations with India. “Pakistan has always supported the Kashmir issue and emphasised the need that it should be resolved in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations, since a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue is essential for viable peace in South Asia.”

The spokesman added, “There is no question that the Kashmir issue has been frozen or put on the back burner,” and reiterated that the Kashmir dispute required a resolution in accordance with the right to self-determination of the people of Kashmir.

Referring to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) meeting held in Geneva on March 5, the spokesman said that the issue of human rights violations had been discussed in this meeting, and that the UNHRC had asked India to repeal some of its laws in Jammu and Kashmir to protect the basic rights of the Kashmiri people. “Pakistan is taking steps to normalise relations with India, but reaching the final destination will be inevitably contingent upon the realisation of the aspirations of Kashmiris,” he affirmed.

He said that the Kashmiri people had rendered innumerable sacrifices in their struggle for self-determination, and that a UN special envoy on human rights has recently urged India to repeal all black laws, including the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.

Fielding a question on the Siachen issue, the spokesman said, “We seek early resolution of this problem like the other issues including the core Jammu and Kashmir dispute.” On the issue of Balochistan, the spokesman said that Pakistan has been handling the situation politically in accordance with its own laws, priorities and constitution.

In response to a question over Iran, the Foreign Office representative said that Pakistan hoped that the issue would be resolved through peaceful means and dialogue, so as to protect the region from undue conflict.President of the Balochistan Republican Party (BRP) Nawabzada Brahmdagh Bugti, who was in Switzerland and had applied for asylum there, welcomed a resolution on Balochistan tabled in the United States’ House of Representatives last month. Nawabzada Hyrbyair Marri also held a meeting with the exiled Balochistan Republican Party chief.
